One word?

I have been seeing a lot of people this year that instead of making new years resolutions they are choosing one word that focuses on their personality or future in some way through out the year. So here are the steps to picking one word:

STEP 1: DETERMINE THE KIND OF PERSON YOU WANT TO BECOME
This is easy for me! I want to become like Christ!

STEP 2: IDENTIFY THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THAT PERSON
There are so many!!!
Gentle, kind, servant, humble, forgiving, joyful, loving, faithful, persistent, compassionate, good, patient, truthful, protective, trustworthy... and the list goes on!

STEP 3: SIMPLY PICK A WORD
I find the 'simply' above is a tad misleading... I want to be all of those things! However, I did narrow it down to one word. However, I was able to narrow it down to one word (well, kind of). I choose "doulos" :)

Doulos is usually translated "slave", "bondservant", or "servant". I want to be all of those things. I want to be a servant, bond-servant, or slave for Christ. I want to do so by serving Him, my family, and others. I desire to have a servant's heart.

I have always desired this, but I would say that after reading Slave by John MacAurthur, the desire to learn more and develop this characteristic in myself has become more prominent. I really look forward to this year, and becoming a "doulos" for Christ!

It is also suggested to pick a verse to go along with this. There are SOOOO many I could have chosen, and I think I will spend the next year studying all of them (or as many as I can...)! The verse I went with was Psalm 119:125 it reads:
I am your servant; give me discernment that I may understand your statutes.

  1. What a great word to meditate on and live out for a year. May God bless you on this journey and may your year be infused with deep abiding joy to light the way!

    Happy New Year!
